Copyright
The Multi-Board Hack 'N Attack live game is distributed as SHAREWARE.
Under this concept you may use the SHAREWARE (unregistered) version for a
reasonable period of time, which I consider to be three weeks, after which you
must either register your copy or discontinue usage.
Registration
With registration you will recieve the latest registered copy of Hack 'N
Attack with the ability to download any futher updates from Secret Service
BBS at no extra cost. You will also recieve any support the author can give
in reference to bugs or other problems that may arise in using the game.
I feel that sysop's have enough expense without charging a high cost for a
game for their users. I have set the cost of registeration at $20.00 which
I feel if people will follow the shareware concept will be enough to cover
shipping and handling and encourage me to write more doors.

Distribution
You are free, in fact encouraged, to distribute the SHAREWARE (unregistered)
version of The Multi-Board Hack 'N Attack Live Game provided that all files
contained in the original Hack 'N Attack archive are distributed in their
original unmodified state.

Introduction
&
How To Play
Hack 'N Attack starts by simulating a system crash and a drop to dos. Do NOT
be alarmed by this! This is normal game play! The users must build up
money and megs by hacking imaginary boards and also by hacking each other.
They may use such devices as Trojan Horses and File trashing. They may
increase their odds by gambling, buying backup devices, and storing
money in the bank. Money left on their possession may be stolen if
another player hacks them. Players may also gain dollars by phreaking
bank accounts. If a player hacks enough boards in one day then he is
asked whether he would like to attempt to beat the BBS Beast. This is
a monster board with many megs. Users that beat the beast are written
to the Beast Hall of fame.
Options and Information
This door game will also create color and mono top 10 bulletins and write them
in directories of your choice written in the .CFG file. It also writes
files for daily news (so players can see who hacked who and what the results
were.). A BBS Beast Hall of Fame file is also created within the program
to try to get players to battle the Beast!!!
Installation and Setup
Installation procedures are relatively simple.
Create a new directory and dissolve the contents of Hack.zip into it.
Run Setup.exe and answer the questions as they appear. If you have
problems answering a question please refer to the detailed description
of each file below.
Setup a batch file to call the door from your bbs. If you do not know how
to do this read the section of this documentation titled BATCH FILES.
Be sure to run Maint.exe regularly or set it up as an event to be run
nightly. It will keep your Jail.new file from getting too large.
The following is what is in each file:
HACK.CFG contains:
The Secret Service BBS <-- Name of BBS
Mike <-- Sysop's first name
Wilson <-- Sysop's last name
C:\Path\BBSinfo.??? <-- Path and filename for Board Info file (See below)
C:\Path\Color.scr <-- Path & Filename to create COLOR bulletin
C:\Path\ASCII.bbs <-- Path & Filename to create MONO bulletin
NO <-- NO or locked COM PORT Baud Rate
The line asking for path and name of board info. file refers to the file
that your particular BBS creates when it drops out to run a door.
This would be:
Wildcat prior to V3.0 --> Callinfo.bbs PCBoard --- PCBoard.sys
GAP or WILDCAT 3.0+ ----> Door.sys Spitfire ----> SFDoors.dat
QuickBBS -------> DorinfoX.def (The X is 1 or 2 depending on node #)
The lines asking for Color and Mono bulletin paths and name refers to
where you want the color and mono top 10 bulletins written and what you
want to call them. This can be any proper path and dos filename.

** Multi-node Notes ***
You may have as many .cfg files as you need to match the number of nodes.
If you are running multiple nodes just make the next .cfg Hack1.cfg and
the third Hack3.cfg etc.
Example: Node 1 Game Game.cfg
Node 2 Game Game1.cfg
** If you run Multi-nodes and need to alter the IRQ or Address of Com 3
or 4 then please read Port.doc!
SETUP.EXE
--------
This program MUST be run the first time you set up Hack 'N Attack.
It will create the Hack.cfg file and set up the type of board you
are running.
HACK.DAT contains:
This file stores the following user data:
"SYSOP","08-14-1989","100","10","100","0"
Data has to be kept in this format. Do not tamper with this file
or you may create an error in the program.
BEAST.TXT
This is the text file that stores the BBS Beast Hall of Fame.
HACK.NEW
This file will store the Hack 'N Attack news files.
HACK.TXT contains:
This is the instruction file for Hack 'N Attack. When a user selects the
HELP option during the game, this file is read for instructions.
This file MUST BE PRESENT and Not altered in any way for
Hack 'N Attack to run properly
BOARD.TXT
---------
Don't worry about this file. It is created when you run setup.exe
This file tells the game which BBS Software you are running and
tells it to read the correct board file. THERE SHOULD NOT BE A
BOARD.TXT FILE IN THE GAME DIRECTORY IF YOUR RUNNING WILDCAT
PRIOR TO VERSION 3.0 !
The game looks for this file and defaults to Wildcat if it isn't
found.
For other boards it will contain one line with one of the following:
QuickBBS --------> QBBS GAP or Wildcat 3.0+ ------> GAP
PCBoard ---------> PCB Spitfire -----------------> SPITFIRE

The following files are either found in your Hack 'N Attack Zip or will be
created by SETUP.EXE or during the runtime execution of the game.
HACK.EXE <--- Executable Program.
HACK.CFG #<--- Configuration File.
HACK.DAT <--- Store User's Name, Last Play Date & Score.
HACK.TXT <--- Instructions Used By Program.
BEAST.TXT <--- File that stores the BBS Beast Hall of Fame
HACK.NEW <--- File that stores the Daily News text
BULL##.SCR *<--- COLOR Bulletin
BULL##.BBS *<--- MONO Bulletin
HACK.DOC <--- This File.
Port.Doc <--- Instructions for altering Com 3 or 4 IRQ or address
# DENOTES that file is created by running SETUP.EXE program at setup.
* DENOTES that file is created during RUN-TIME.
Batch Files
=================
Be sure that you have edited or created the HACK.CFG file with the correct
information as described earlier in these docs. The individual setups do not
repeat this necessary process.
Wildcat! 1.13 & 2.0+ Setup:
---------------------------
First, create your DOOR##.BAT (2.0+) or LIVE##.BAT (1.13) like this eample:

CD \WILDCAT\DOORS\HACK
HACK HACK.CFG
CD \WILDCAT
CAT.BAT
place this batch file in your Node# directory if running Multi-Nodes or in
your Wildcat (default) directory if single node.
Second, Create a sub-directory for the door program such as in the following
example:
C:\WILDCAT\DOORS\HACK
Third, put the HACK game files in the \WILDCAT\DOORS\HACK directory.

Forth, add this game to your live program menu for user selection and your
ready to run the door.
If this is a little unclear then please read your systems documentation for
more detailed instructions.
If you use a door monitoring program then read their documentation for
their specific setup.
Gap Setup:
----------
First, add the number and name of the door to your menu. This will allow the
user to select the door by number.
Second, edit or create the file called DOORS.DAT which is normally in the GEN
directory. Following is an example line to add:
HA 10
where 'HA' stands for the name of the batch file (shown below) to invoke the
the door and '10' is the required security level.
Third, create a sub-directory for HACK to be placed in. And example
would be:
C:\GAP\HACK
place all the files in the HACK.ZIP archive inside this directory.
Forth, create a batch file called HACK which should be placed in the
default directory. Following is example contents of this file:
ECHO OFF
CD\GAP\HACK
HACK HACK.CFG
CD\GAP
GAP
the last line in the HACK file should invoke the batch file which loads
the GAP BBS system.
If this is a little unclear then please read your systems documentation for
more detailed instructions.
If you use a door monitoring program then read their documentation for
their specific setup.
Spitfire Setup:
---------------
First edit your SFDOOR.MNU and add the following line. If you are not running
and doors at this time you will need to create this file.
HACK, 10
Where HACK is the name of the door to appear on your menu and the 10
is the lowest security level that will be allowed to enter the door. Don't
forget the comma (,) after the name.

Second create a sub-directory to place the door game in. In this example we
will use 'C:\SF\DOOR_A' for the game directory.
Third move all the files in the HACK.ZIP archive into this directory.
Forth edit your SF.BAT file adding the following lines.
:DOOR_A
CD\SF\DOORS_A
HACK HACK.CFG
CD\SF
GOTO LOOP
Fifth, rerun Sf.BAT and your ready to begin play.

PCBoard 14.0+ Setup:
--------------------
First, edit your DOORS and DOORSG file so that it shows HACK with the door
number relating to it's position in DOORS.DAT.
Second, edit the DOORS.DAT file so that it includes HACK.
Third, create a sub-directory for HACK to be placed in. And example
would be:
C:\PCB\HACK
place all the files in the HACK.ZIP archive inside this directory.
Forth, create a batch file called HACK which should be placed in the
default directory. Following is example contents of this file:
ECHO OFF
CD\PCB\HACK
HACK HACK.CFG
CD\PCB
BOARD
the last line in the HACK file should invoke the batch file which loads
the PCboard BBS system.
If this is a little unclear then please read your systems documentation for
more detailed instructions.
If you use a door monitoring program then read their documentation for
their specific setup.
QuickBBS Setup:
---------------
First, add the game to your games menu and select the correct type for doors.

Second, create a sub-directory for the game and move all the files from the
zip file to this directory.
Third, the game reads the file DORINFOx.DEF. Where 'x' is the node number.
Since QuickBBS only supports one node at this time then this file should be
'DORINFO1.DEF'. This file's drive\path\filename should be on the third line
of the configuration file.
Note: It was told to me that the upcoming 3.0 version of QuickBBS will
support Multi-Nodes and that the 'DORINFOx.DEF' will be changed
to 'DORINFxx.DEF' to support Multi-Nodes. This game is written
where you can specify this new name as well as any others.
Forth, create a batch file called HACK which should be placed in the
default directory. Following is example contents of this file:

CD\QUICKBBS\HACK
HACK HACK.CFG
CD\QUICKBBS
QBBS.BAT
the last line in the HACK file should invoke the batch file which loads
the QuickBBS system.
